Former Prime Minister of Malta for nineyears (2004-2013) whileretaining the portfolio of Minister of Finance for the first four years of his tenure (2004-2008). Duringthisperiod, Malta successfullyachieved the Maastricht criteria and wasadmitted to the Eurozone in January 2008. Dr Gonzi successfullymanagedMalta’seconomythroughout the global financial and economiccrisis, achieving consistent economicgrowth and stable employmentlevelswhichexceeded EU averages.
Throughouthis tenure, the restructuring of the Malteseeconomywasaccelerated, making Malta an extremely attractive location for foreign direct investment in financial services, information technology, maritime and aviation hubs and high value addedmanufacturing clusters.
Throughouthispoliticalcareerhewasheavilyinvolved in the drafting of major new legislationincluding the Maltese National Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD), the Employment and Industrial Relations Law and the EqualOpportunities (personswithDisability) Act.
Prior to entering full time politics Dr Gonzi wasappointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of one of Malta’sleading Group of Companies. Throughouthislegalcareerhespecialised in commercial law, maritime law, and employment and industrial relations.
